Gold Pips — What a Pip Is in XAUUSD, and How Far Gold Moves

A pip in gold is 0.10 of price. This page is about what that is worth in movement: how far XAUUSD has travelled today in pips, how far it travels on an ordinary day, and how many pips the spread takes before a trade is level. Every figure below is the one this account's own feed is reporting right now.

Brokers do not agree with each other about either word, which is why both are stated here from what this system actually uses rather than from a convention. The engine measures movement in pips of 0.10 — a move from 4390.5 to 4391.5 is ten pips — and the feed quotes gold to three decimal places, so a point is the third of them. The spread above is the same number said twice: 0.10 of price is 100 of those points.

If your own platform shows gold to two decimals, its point is 0.01 and its figures will be a tenth of the ones here. The pip is unaffected: it is a distance in price, not a count of decimals.

The daily ATR is what this system treats as a normal day's travel, measured on the daily timeframe from this account's own history. It is the honest answer to “how many pips does gold move in a day”: not a round number somebody remembers, but the one the feed is currently reporting, which changes as volatility changes.

The proportion matters more for exits than for entries. A day that has already travelled well beyond its usual range has, on average, less left in it — which argues for protecting profit rather than for expecting a reversal. The system treats range exhaustion as a statement about magnitude and never about direction.

What the spread takes first

A position starts 2.4 pips behind the moment it opens, because it is opened at one side of the spread and valued at the other — a buy at the ask against the bid, a sell at the bid against the ask. Against an ordinary day of 572 pips, that is the first thing any gold trade has to recover.

It is also why the spread is judged against movement here rather than against a fixed number of points: the same spread is cheap on a day that travels a thousand pips and expensive on one that travels two hundred. A setup is refused when the spread is too wide for the movement available to it.

Common questions about gold pips

What is a pip in gold?

A pip in XAUUSD is 0.10 of price: a move from 4390.5 to 4391.5 is ten pips. That is the distance this system measures movement in, and the unit every figure on this page is converted into.

Is a pip the same as a point in gold?

No. A point is the last decimal your feed quotes, so it depends on the feed. This one quotes gold to three decimal places, which makes a point 0.001 and a pip 100 points. A platform showing two decimals has a point of 0.01, and ten of those to a pip. The pip is the same distance either way.

How many pips does gold move in a day?

It changes with volatility, so the only honest answer is a measured one. The daily ATR above is what this feed currently reports as an ordinary day's travel, shown in price and in pips, beside how much of it today has already used.

How many pips is the spread on gold?

The live spread is shown above in both points and pips. It is what a position starts behind the moment it opens, because it is opened at one side of the spread and valued at the other.
